Molokini sits in open water about 2.5 miles off Makena. Early in the day the sea is usually calm; by late morning the trade winds pick up, and by afternoon the crater is often too choppy to moor inside.
That is why the classic Molokini trip leaves between 6:30 and 7:30 AM, and why afternoon trips are usually sold as "Molokini or somewhere else".
The quick answer
Go in the morning. Four Winds says on its own site that afternoon trips rarely make it to the crater, since afternoons are windier and choppier. Even in the morning Molokini is never guaranteed: the captain decides on the day and goes to a sheltered reef such as Turtle Town if the crater is rough. Book an early departure early in your stay, so you can try again.

Is morning or afternoon better for Molokini?
Morning, clearly: the sea is calmest before the trade winds build, which is when boats reach the crater.
Most Molokini trips check in between 5:45 and 7:30 AM. The earliest, the Malolo at 6:30 and the Redline raft at 7:00, give you the best odds and the fewest boats. A June 2026 Express guest reported that the water was rough at 11 and that their captain said it is usually calmer in the early morning.

Because the afternoon trade winds make the crater choppy, so afternoon boats usually snorkel a sheltered reef such as Coral Gardens instead.
The operators say so. Four Winds' afternoon trip goes to Coral Gardens, and the Malolo's 1:00 PM trip is sold as Molokini Crater or Coral Gardens, depending on conditions. Guests on that trip agree: one wrote, "Don't count on going to Molokini on the afternoon trip." Afternoon trips are cheaper and fine as a snorkel, but not if the crater is the point.

Is Molokini guaranteed on a snorkel tour?
No: the captain decides on the morning, and several 2026 guests on the big boats report being diverted.
A Four Winds II guest in July 2026 wrote: "We were supposed to go to Molokini crater but couldn't due to weather. We went to Turtle town and had hours to snorkel in calm beautiful water." Pride of Maui and Malolo guests in September 2026 report the same. It is a safety call, not a bait and switch.

Want the best odds? The Redline raft aims to be the first boat at the crater.

The trip still runs, to a sheltered site such as Turtle Town or Coral Gardens, and it is not a cancellation.
You keep the meals, the gear and the snorkel time, and turtles are often easier to find at those sites. If the operator cancels the whole trip for weather, you are offered another date or a refund, and on Viator you can cancel free yourself up to 24 hours before if the forecast looks bad.
Is a late-morning trip a good compromise?
It can be: the 10:30 AM Molokini Express often finds a quieter crater, but the water can be rougher by then.
One guest wrote that the later time (10:30 to 12:30) meant they had the crater to themselves; another found the water rough at 11. If you are a confident snorkeler who hates crowds, it is worth a try; for children or nervous swimmers, go earlier.
Like a lie-in? The Molokini Express leaves Kihei at 10:30 AM with at most 24 people.

Summer usually brings the calmest seas; winter adds humpback whales on the ride out.
The water is warm all year, but a thin wetsuit top helps if you feel the cold. Late summer and autumn can bring storm swell: one Pride of Maui guest in September 2026 missed the turtle stop because of hurricane surf. Whatever the month, book early in your stay.

Can you see whales on a Molokini trip?
Often in winter: humpbacks are in Maui waters roughly from December to April, with the most from January to March.
Guests on the Four Winds II and Sail Maui report many whales on the way to Molokini in winter. Boats must stay 100 yards away. By late April most have left: a guest on the Quicksilver in late April 2026 saw none. If whales matter more than snorkeling, a dedicated two-hour whale watch goes looking for them.

Here in winter? The Quicksilver whale watch from Maalaea brings a hydrophone to hear the whale song.
